Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), i.e. Tachypleus Amebocyte Lysate (TAL), is a kind of lyophilized product which mainly contains amoebocytes extracted from the blue blood of horseshoe crab.
Limulus Amebocyte Lysate is used for detecting endotoxin which exist in most of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria.
Endotoxin detection is necessary, because products contaminated with pyrogens can lead to development of fever, induction of inflammatory response, shock, organ failure and death in humans.
